The seed is the element that is the very origin of Agriculture, the source of life and symbol of a potential future. It is also the basis for the design of this piece in contemporary basketry. It conveys a message of hope, preserving a craft whose origins date back to the Castro Culture, whose days may be numbered because there is no-one in Portugal to keep it going.
With this piece, Cristina Fonseca wanted to leave a seed that might revive this ancient craft and prevent its extinction. “Seed” is made of plaited brown wood strips using a mix of traditional techniques and processes developed over years of work.
